31st year of family entertainment. Events include the return of the famous Cow Decorating Contest, concerts, Lip sync contest, Talent show, and the Columbus Days Parade on the afternoon of July2, 4 p.m. in downtown Columbus.

COUNTY FAIR
July 13 - 16, 2006
67th Annual Fair offers exhibits, midway rides and live entertainment. No admission charge to the fairgrounds.

FISHING

Loup Canal - carp, channel and flathead catfish and drum. Record-breaking catfish have been taken from the Loup Canal. The silting basin west of Genoa and the Columbus Powerhouse are popular spots 

Lake North - carp, channel catfish, drum and walleye have been taken from Lake North

Lake Babcock - bullhead, carp, channel and flathead catfish have been taken from Lake Babcock.

Avid fisherman as well as the amateur angler will enjoy these peaceful, rustic surroundings located north of Columbus. Fee fishing, with no license required, in a lake stocked with trout, walleye, perch, catfish, bluegill, crappie, etc. A lodge is available to rent for groups.

GOLFING 

Quail Run

Quail Run offers 18 holes of golf, snack bar, driving range, chipping green, putting green, professionally stocked golf shop, and rental clubs. One of the finest municipal golf courses in the Midwest, this Frank Hummel layout is as picturesque as it is challenging. Five tees on each hole make the course playable for golfers of various skills. 

Elks Country Club

The Elks is one of Nebraska's statewide arboretums, accommodating between 150 to 160 species of trees and shrubs. The course was designed by Dick Phelps in 1965 and remodeled in 1993. The Elks Country Club also offers a driving range, chipping green, putting green, swimming pool, lounges, restaurant, and pro shop. 

Van Berg Golf Course

Built in 1928, this charming 9-hole course is just right for a quick round of golf. Named after the famous Columbus horseman, Marion H. Van Berg, it is located on the west side of Pawnee Park off Hwys. 30 and 81. Van Berg also offers a putting green, golf shop, and refreshments. 

Country Shadows Golf Course

Opening in 1995,this truly executive 9-hole golf course is Columbus' newest. This Par 29 course is 1,367 yards long and the quality greens wind through a stately residential area. Country Shadows also offers a restaurant and lounge

Steepleview Golf Course

Located just off the Pan American Highway (U.S.81), this 9-hole course is 25 minutes north of Columbus. Also available are a driving range and clubhouse offering snacks and beverages 

Boulevard Greens Miniature Golf Course

This is a family fun favorite. Located adjacent to Boulevard Lanes, the Miniature Golf Course is open during the summer. 

HIKING/BIKING
Downtown Runaround - July 22

Bob Lake Trail - cross a footbridge and continue on this 9-ft. wide limestone shale-surfaced trail.  This 1.3 mile long section is recommended for well-equipped hikes and mountain bikers.  Follow the path along the dike to the Lake North perimeter road.

Two Lakes Trail - this scenic, traffic-free 2.5 mile paved path starts at Lake North and winds through a shady park and wildlife area. After crossing the Lake Babcock footbridge, well- equipped hikers and mountain bikers can continue on grass and gravel around the two lakes. 

Volksmarch - a leisurely 10K (6.2 miles) year round walk through a scenic, historic area over a predetermined route suitable for strollers and wheelchairs with discretion. The walk is non-competitive and participants can walk at their own pace, thus making it an excellent recreational activity for the entire family. The starting point is the Holiday Station Store, 2903 23rd Street where maps are available. Sponsored by the Mid-Nebraska Trail Seekers.


LAWN CHAIRS ON THE SQUARE

Thursday nights June 1-Aug. 3
Held in Frankfort Square in Downtown Columbus. An artistic collection of local and professional talent. Varies each week. Hot dogs, funnel cakes and kettle korn available. Free Kiddie train rides.


RACING

Live Thoroughbred Races

Horse racing fans enjoy live thoroughbred horse racing in Columbus from July 28th-Sept. 10th, 2005 . www.agpark.com This 5/8-mile track, located at Agricultural Park, is just 6 blocks off U.S. Highway 30 and is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 81. The facilities, owned and operated by the Platte County Agricultural Society, include an open-air grandstand with a seating capacity of 3500.

Simulcast Thoroughbred Racing

Agricultural Park hosts simulcasting throughout the year. Race fans can enjoy racing from around the country in the air-conditioned Club Room. The facility has a seating capacity of 600, food and beverage service, complete satellite links, strategically placed monitors, and pari-mutuel tellers. The clubroom, with its inside and outside stair access, can also be reach by elevator.

U.S. 30 Speedway

In its 20th year of operation, this 1/3 mile clay track offers Stock Car Racing every Thursday night from April to September

City of Columbus Pawnee Plunge Water Park has four water slides including an inner tube slide, splash bowl slide triple threat & speed slides plus a zero entry splash pad, interactive play area & sand play area. When hunger strikes, there is no need to leave the Pawnee Plunge, the concession stand has something to satisfy your appetite! Hours are 7 days a week, 10am-10pm; admission fee is $3 for ages 2-17, $5 18 & over.

One of the finest indoor pools in Nebraska. This "Olympic" sized pool has 8 swim lanes, separate shallow area for the youngsters, low and high diving board and slide for small children. The facility is not open to the public on Wednesday or Saturday nights or on Sunday

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS

Open to the public for fishing and hunting in season with a particularly good habitat for pheasants, quail and dove. George Syas WMA - 917 acres located 2 miles south-southeast of Genoa on Highway 39 then 1 ½ miles east and 1 mile north

Looking Glass Creek WMA - 67 acres located 1 mile south of Monroe
Wilkinson WMA - 634 acres, 300 acres restored wetlands located 5 miles west and 1 mile north of Columbus
